Do a fashionista glamor party, have them dress up in glam girl style, karaoke, and walk the "cat walk" or "red carpet" Dance to music. The girls will have a lot of fun. You can have them paint there first initial (those wood ones you get at a craft store) staple ribbon to the back so the can hang them on a nail or hook on their bedroom door it is an awesome party favor. You can get old prom style dresses on sale after prom season especially at half price stores. Or you can find fancy looking things at thrift stores. Good luck and have fun.

Being with friends becomes increasingly important for 6-8 year olds so parties take on greater meaning. They're old enough to enjoy most organized games and have a well-developed sense of fairness.
Children of this age have definite ideas about their parties. Listen to them (within reason!).
Ages six and up are ready for parties outside the home if desired.
Children can play games with rules like dominoes, cards, etc. (One family hosted a kids casino night for eights with great success.)
Kids this age like secrets and mysteries, so consider games with clues and puzzles.
Fewer children this age are fussy eaters, so you can take more chances with your menu.
Parties can exceed two-and-a-half hours. (if you want)

here's some ideas:
-hire a clown
-get a bouncy house
-take kids to chucky cheese (kudos to the person who said that before)
- cake. lots and lots of cake. just any junk food. lots of junk food. trust me, in a couple of hours they'll crash, so you won't have to deal with the craziness. =3
-8 year olds are easy to entertain. get stations around the house as games. like station #1 would be hide and seek, station #2 is a dancing contest. statioin #3 is pin the tail on the donkey etc.
and that's all i can think of. =D

The part could have a "Capt Jack Sparrow" theme. The cutest lad in the world dressed as him once.
Then set up an obstracle course in the backyard, paint some balls black and have a "cannonball throw", walk the plank walk on a board.. let them be wild and free...

Is there a place to play laser tag in your area? I've done that for a couple birthday parties and it's always a big hit.

Your best bet is to find out what he/she likes/is into and build a theme around that. For example, if he he/she likes trains, use/make train-related decorations. Does he/she have a favorite TV show, or video game? A favorite sport/team?
Most bakeries can customize cakes to suit whatever theme you choose for your child.

When I wa slittle I had a friend who was a gymnast and she had her parties at the gymnastics gym. It was fun. We jumped on a trampoline and into a foam-block pool.
Rent a moonbounce, take them to Discovery Zone.
