I glanced through a few of the previous answers, and there seems to be a recurring theme with which I don't agree. Regardless of whether the "Harry Potter fad" dies down or not, there will always be a demand for the fantasy genre. It's not like interest will suddenly plummet once the Harry Potter series is over. If you really look, there's been books similar to Harry Potter for years (and will be for many more years, I'm sure).
As to whether or not you should publish, I would suggest sooner rather than later. The longer you wait to publish, the less chance you will be as devoted to the story. If you wait too long, eventually the goal probably won't have as much hold over you as it does now. Publish it while everything's fresh in your mind.
Ah well, I never was one to be patient. Anyways, good luck!

I think you should wait, maybe untill the Harry Potter series has ended. When the last Harry Potter book comes out, millions of people will have only eyes for it. So wait untill the rage for Potter is over, than come out with your book. And even if your book does take a while to get published, that could actually help you. Some people will be sad about the Harry Potter series being ended, and they might want to read more Potter books, but since its over, they will get your book, which is supposedly like Harry Potter. But just make sure its not really the same as Harry Potter, because it might not get published, or Potter fans will not like it, because they might think its to much like the original, but they might want the original more than the might want your book. Good luck with your book, and could you Email me the title of your book, so I can look for it if you ever get it published? Thanks!

Oh Anna, I think I'd wait. Harry Potter is so popular and coming out with another could really harm your possibilities of having a best seller. Let Harry run it's course and publish your book five years after the last movie is shown. This will give the audience a break and you will look fresh and new, not like you plagiarized.

I'd give it a shot now, simply because it can take a very long time to get published. there are many series which possess some sort of similarities to Harry Potter; i wouldn't let that stop you. people have the tendency to use the series as a comparison, but some of the ideas expressed in there are found in a variety of sources...some from before his time.
go for it!!! :)

Personally, I would seek to find publication now. Everyone knows that Harry Potter will end soon. During that time, you can get your book into the whole publishing ordeal. By the time the HP fans die down, your book will be out in stores.

wouldn't people get tired of that theme after Harry Potter dies down? i mean, i think a series like that will always be compared to Harry Potter, no matter when its published. I pretty sure that's not what you want.

It's always the right time for stories as good as Harry Potter.

You can't simply publish. Harry Potter and the Potterverse is heavily copyrighted. It will be many years before anything can be published without J.K. Rowling's blessing and then it will have to published by the same companies that published her novels.

What do you mean, there are a thousand books with that same theme.
It's all the rage right now.
To the point they are spoofing it on Saturday Night Live and David Letterman.
Seek publication now while its a fad.
