What did you think of it? I've been reading it and it's sooo long and convoluted. I do like fantasy novels and I do like the basic story-line but I can't understand why this is an international best-seller - opinions?!!

I did read it. It is long and not a quick read. I think it got the bestseller/buzz it did because it is reasonably well written and a somewhat unique story. Most dystopian fantasy is so out there, so far removed from our world. Clarke took an aspect of fantasy, that magicians exist, and put that into our world. How would that have changed history?

I admit it wasn't a light read, but I did enjoy it. I read a lot of books, and therefore give an author a lot of credit for an original idea, or an original presentation of an old idea. If you don't like it, quit. It doesn't "pick up". If you aren't enjoying it so far, there is nothing in the middle or end that is shocking. There are thousands of books published every year. Read what you like -- there is no penalty for not finishing a book.

I love fantasy novels read them avidly but this is the first one I didn't get to the end of. I have never done that before, I'll go back and give it another go one day I'm sure, sometimes on the second attempt books are better especially as you say the basic plot is interesting.

I agree nothing about this book indicates why it is an international best seller. It is poorly written and the plot is seriously convoluted. I suppose the idea is sound, maybe people buy it but no one finishes it. There was that list recently of the most unfinished books, his should have been on it perhaps.
