My wife and I like our cup of tea in the mornings and as we are going to Bahia Maimon and staying at the Rui merengue all inclusive for the first time, we wondered if there was a kettle etc in the rooms and can we buy bottles of milk etc. at the resort. .

Any help would be very gratefully received and any further tips for a pair of first timers.

I can't speak for sure for the Riu Merengue, but most good hotels here do give a kettle/coffee maker in the rooms, and offer a selection of tea-bags, and have milk and creamers available. All kinds of milk products are easily available here, full-cream, skimmed, half-cream, sewmi-skimmed, you name it, and they are mostly excellent. Look for the two main suppliers here, Rica and Parmalat. It's usual to buy in the i litre cardboard cartons here, although many products can be bought in smaller units.

Make sure that any water you use for making tea, coffee, or just drinking, comes out of a bottle or container which you personally broke the seal on, best way to avoid digestive tract problems.

Watch out for all the hustlers trying to sell you stuff, they can be quite pestilential. However, if handled ( by you ) with good humour you can actually turn saying no into a fun event. Remember that no matter what the circumstances you can always make a Dominican smile, just say "Ola !" with a bright smile on your face. They are naturally very easy-going happy people.

Try and get out of the hotel as much as you can, close by you have Cambiaso village, a stunningly beautiful beach with very friendly people, and a little further west is Luperon, a village on a double bay, with often hundreds of boaters, living on board, enjoying the cruising life. The marina bars make great entertainment for a day out. Also, just a little further west again you have the village of La Isabelle, the site of Columbus first settlement on Hispaniola, there is a museum and a great beach on the bay.

Whatever, don't be afraid to be a bit adventurous, despite bad publicity to the contrary, this is a country with very little violent crime. We feel 'safer' here than in Europe.

You'll prob need to take your tea bags, sugar and kettle and dried milk. Most resorts in DR are all inclusive and dont have kettles/cups in the rooms. I never noticed anything in shops edible except for snacks etc. No real provisions. There will be milk etc in the villages, but the resorts are generally miles from the nearest village and transport isnt always easy. However you can get tea, coffee etc from somewhere on the resort most of the day and night and the food is incredible.
And if you get chance go safari-ing in a jeep and boogie boarding
We got a dinky lil kettle with plastic cups and spoons that fit inside from argos for a few quid.

We stayed all inclusive in Dom Rep and there wasn't a kettle in the room. However you could get tea or whatever you wanted. Don't know about skimmed. In the afternoon they served up tea and cake! Very English. All inclusive meant exactly that. Brilliant.

What's the point of taking little england with you all that way? Surely, you should be savouring the delights (or otherwise) of the country. May as well stay at home if you're desperate for a cup of tea - or go to Sri Lanka.
