Do you, like me find that most of the detective novels out now are quite predictable, are there any out there that keep you riveted and guessing to the end?

I agree with another one of your respondents - P D James is excellent and classy, never disappoints. I found some old detective stories by Cyril Hare which were really good, also some by D M Greenwood. You may have to get these on ABE Books, second hand. I still read Maigret. Only decent book by Agatha Christie is The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. I still like Sherlock Holmes because I read them to my children. Ruth Rendell is inconsistent.

I totally agree I just read the new Mo Hayder and the twist ending I had already guest by half way. ON top of that they always follow the same formula no one is inventive any more they always just make it more gruesome rather than clever. I have started reading much older books and there are some good ones. PD James is excellent.

I really want someone to actually be innovative rather than re-hashing existing story lines!

rant over you can guess I totally agree!

Harlen Coben, James Patterson, Kay Hooper, Karin Slaughter, Jeffery Deaver and Michael Connelly are just a few of the ones I keep going back to, because I like to be challenged. I don't like the books that are predictable and that leave hardly anything to the imagination. These authors (among some others) rarely do that to me.

Try Kathy Reichs, or the Inspector Morse novels of Colin Dexter.

I agree with The Hand. I have just read Dead Simple and Looking Good Dead by Peter James, who is brilliant. His plots are not predictable and I found both these books unputdownable.

Tess Gerritson is another writer who has good twists.

J.D. Robb is a pen name for Nora Roberts. Her "...In Death" series is fantastic.
But, yeah, I agree, you solve them way before the book ends, then get annoyed with how dumb the characters are.
I really hate when the character starts out as super smart, then gets dumber as the story progresses.

A bit old now, but always very readable are Dick Francis's novels. Also Peter Robinson is my new discovery. Try them.
