Does a hacked mp4 player still work?

I was thinking of getting an mp4 player off ebay for 1 cent with free shipping, and I know that they are hacked. The 4 GB are only 1, 1s only 512s, etc. But I was just wondering: Do these hacked things still work? I've seen sites on how to format it, but does the player still work corectly, even though it has less memory? Any help would be great, especially from someone who this has actually happened to.
