The "gel" is from overwatering. Probably needs more sunlight too.

Remove the plant from its pot and wash all the old soil from the roots to get rid of the gel. Repot in fresh potting soil. Place in a location where it gets direct sunlight for as much time as possible. Bamboo (Bambusa) likes it hot. Don't overwater it.

I have "lucky bamboo". It shouldn't be planted in soil. Just dump the water once every week or so & fill with fresh water. That should take care of the problem. About sun, I keep mine in the bathroom on the toilet tank in front of the window, frosted glass, east window, & it does fine.

I do not have a Bamboo plant but many of my friends do...the largest is in a tall clear glass cylinder vase...they have filled the vase with fish tank gravel half way (rinsed gravel). The plant is inserted in the middle and stands very staight. The water covers half of the exposed plant.

It is very beautiful, has leaves, with colorful gravel, but sits on a desk. The only sun is filtered through a window screen and vinyl blinds.

I hope this helps...sometimes we give our plants too much physical attention and not enough verbal attention...I believe plants react to verbal attention...

Good luck...

is your bamboo in soil?? Bamboo like it much better when they are in nothing but water and rocks. The soil you have it in sounds like it is growing bacteria, which is common since bamboo like it so wet.
