Firewall and antivirus both are a must. I like Norton Internet Security Suite 2007. It does not pester me all the time with a lot of questions and it runs a firewall, antivirus and scans incoming and outgoing e-mail for viruses, but that is only personal preference.

Also, never underestimate physical threats. Secure passwords both from prying eyes and from keyloggers. Make sure your computer is physically safe as well.
