No reason to feel stupid. Everybody gets confused!

Now to your question. A 'fiance' is a man who is engaged to be married. A 'fiancee' is a woman engaged to be married. Both of the words are pronounced identically, which is why most people get confused. The separate feminine form is because of a morphology of a grammatical gender in French, where the word originated.

So, the answer is YES, 'fiance' applies to male and 'fiancee' to the female.

I hope I've helped.

the word is french actually so the proper spelling is fiancé
the accent above the E creates the phonetic sound "say".

also i didnt know this untill i googled it...your fiance is the man you plan to marry; your fiancee (or fiancée) is the woman you plan to marry.
