The Devils

Let's dissect this

Goalie:
I really don't have to go into depth on this one. Marty Brodeur is the best goalie currently playing hockey and quite possibly ever to play the game. Ryan Miller isn't anything that special.

Defense:
Both of these teams are defensive teams. While Buffalo tries to play more of an offensive game, the Devils are known for their defense. The Devils boast defensemen like all-star Brian Rafalski, the underrated Colin White, experienced veterans like Brad Lukowich, and great up-and-coming players like Paul Martin and John Oduya. Even without some of their past superhero-like defensement (Scott Stevens, Scott Niedermayer), the Devils still play a defense-minded game. On the other hand, Buffalo lacks the defense depth of the Devils. They may have the guidance of the veteran Teppo Numminen and the power of others like Dmitri Kalinin, Brian Cambell and Toni Lydman, they just aren't as solid as the Devils.

Offense:
Strategy is key here. The Devils depend on the counterattack, while the Sabers try to make opportunities. Both are great styles of play, but the Devil's style is just safer. So long as the Devil's excellent defense is doing their job, the Devils will put in the appropriate amount of goals (which may not be many). The Sabers, while sometimes shutting teams down by huge goal deficits, can also suffer due to offensive breakdowns. I'll admit, offensive skill goes to the Sabers. Vanek, Brier, Drury, Zubrus, Hecht, and more...they are pretty stacked. However, they don't beat the Devils (who boast Parise, Gomez, Gionta and Elias) too badly.

Overall, the teams are very close. Both are excellent and both are cup contenders. However, I think the Devils take the cake in this competition (even if its slightly).

On paper, the Sabres. In a 7-game series, the Devils.

The Devils, they might not have any offense but they don't need it. They are built as a defensive team.
For the record the Devils are 2-1 against the Sabres this year. All the games have been 3-2 and one is left in Buffalo.

The Devils and it is not even close. The Sabres have never won anything while Jersey has with many of the same players they have now and in the play-offs, the key ingredient is goaltending and the Devils HAVE THE BEST while the Sabres have an unproven and I think overrated goalie. Also, the Sabres are too small and too fragile for the play-offs. Like I said, not even close. BTW, I don't like either team.

It would all depend on which part of the game you are looking at. In goal, the devils have the upper hand. I'm not taking anything away from Ryan, I think he's one of the best out there, but I would have to say that Marty is a little bit better. When it come to depth of the team, gotta go with the Sabres. They have had so many problems with players getting hurt this season and the keep finding ways to win. I could go on for hours, but there are just too many different parts of the game that you could talk about that we all would get lost in the middle of it.. Overall I would say they are an even match up with the edge slightly going to Buffalo. It would be great to see them in the Eastern Conference Finals in May. Would make for one hell of a series.

Goalie-- Devils are better
Defense-- Devils are better
Offense-- Sabres are MUCH much better

Whoever has home ice advantage in a seven game series, is the team I pick to win that series. So that probably means Buffalo.

Sabres, but Devils are very close.

Goaltending
Devils got the advantage in this one. Brodeur is very good, very good record, GAA, Save %, and easily in the Hall-of-Fame no doubt in my mind. Scott Clemmensen is also a capable backup if Brodeur does go down. Ryan Miller is very good, and the guy who he isn't anything special, you don't know much. Ryan Miller is one of the best younger goalies in the league, without a doubt, along with others like Rick DiPietro and Marc-Andre Fleury. Miller is one of the many futures to the Sabres franchise. He is very capable of leading them to winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. They also got a capable backup in Ty Conklin, the old Columbus Blue Jackets goalie, who has won his only game as a Sabre 5-3 vs the streaking Florida Panthers.

Defense
Devils got good defenseman in Brian Rafalski, a very good veteran, Paul Martin, who is also good. But the Sabres got a bunch others in Jaroslav Spacek, Teppo Numminen (He doesn't score oftenly, but he is definetly very good at playing defense, which is his job in the first place), Henrik Tallinder, Brian Campbell, Toni Lydman, Nathan Paetsch, this list will take too long to name all the defenseman, because they all contribute, and the Sabres got a clear advtanage in defense all-around.

Offense
This was the category I was waiting to argue it out about. Patrik Elias, Scott Gomez, Jamie Langenbrunner, Zach Parise, Brian Gionta, Sergei Brylin, and this list takes forever. But Gionta has to spent it up and score some more, and with his speed, he should be a contentender for top 10 in scoring every season. The Sabres, on the other hand, got some players who dominate completely all over. Daniel Briere has 29 goals, 57 assists, he has great vision, great hands, good speed, and one of the best in the NHL behind the net. We also got Chris Drury, who is a proven veteran back when he was on the ever so stacked Colorado Avalanche with his 35 goals, 25 assists. Thomas Vanek, great, young player, who started off in the AHL on the Rochester Americans, this proves that hard work pays off.. big time with his 34 goals, 33 assists. We also got Jason Pominville, who also was a teammate of Vanek's on Rochester, but he also rose up to the occasion when the Sabres called him up with 31 goals, 28 assists, he is also fast, and is good all-around. There we got THREE 30 goal scorers, how many other teams have done it? 0. How many teams don't even have 3 20 goal scorers? I'm not gonna go search that, but I'm sure there is quite a few. And, last, but not least, Maxim Afinogenov. He is so quick, so agile, and one of the most exciting players to watch, behind players like Ilya Kovalchuk, and Sidney Crosby. He has 23 goals, 34 assists, and he's been for over a month. He is very dangerous on a breakaway, and is one of those players who can go full length and just make the goalie go one way, deke him, and just go the other way (It's happened plenty of times, search that on youtube.). His only problem is he skates with a puck a bit too much, and is eventually going to become predictable because he does the same move a lot, but it still manages to work somehow, and nobody has caught on, which I don't believe how anyone can when even I know what he is going to end up doing when he has the puck, going full speed down the ice.

Overall, I believe the Sabres are better and I could see the more depth Sabres just making the Devils defense look silly. Sabres, I believe, have a very good shot at the Stanley Cup, and with all their speed, how can you doubt them of their shot at winning their first Stanley Cup in the franchise history when you got that kind of lineup on one team, and manage to keep all that young and powerful talent under the salary cap somehow.

If Marty Brodeur is in the zone, the Devils get the edge.
If Marty is off, the Sabres get the edge.
The balance hinges on Marty.

Buffalo Sabres ALL THE WAY

The Sabres because they have better talent. They can score much more than the Devils. When they don't have any injuries, they have very good depth in their lineup. They also have a solid goaltender in Ryan Miller.
