If reconnecting, restarting and all that other nonsense doesn't work, then you need to install a driver because your computer doesn't recognize your hardware. Then you would have to run the install wizard for your device and have it scan your computer for the driver. For example, if it is a Targus brand mouse, you might want to go on their website and find a driver for it. If you cannot find it there, then you can try driverguide.com but you have to sign up for an account.

Had this problem with a mouse at work. Restarting the computer worked for a little while then frooze again, I ended up putting a new mouse in and was fine. Would suggest checking what has previously been mentioned, but if it doesn't work it may be that the mouse has had it's day. Perhaps borrow one from somewhere before buying one just in case it is something else.

Check that the mouse is plugged in.
If it is a USB connection (small rectagular plug about 1cm across) then reseating it will fix the fault instantly.
If it is not a USB connection (any of the round plugs) then you'll need to re-boot after plugging it in.

If that doesn't work then try another mouse. The last resort is to go to Control Panel and check the mouse settings.

Make sure the mouse is plugged in. If it is, completely turn off the computer and turn back on. That usually works for me.
