Well, the chase and hershey experiment was how people figured out what DNA did. Using radioactive materials and a bacteriophage, they figured out that the bacteriophage (T2) passed on its hereditary materials through DNA (it's only made up of DNA and a proein coat). The concept of DNA was discovered by Mendel with the famous pea plant experiement.
