What does the title signify?

The title was suggested by Steinbeck's wife; the title is a reference to the Battle Hymn of the Republic:

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

Dear Kimberly: I believe the answer goes back a bit further than Battle Hymn of the Republic. Check out the passage from the Bible, Revelation 14.

Sounds pretty scary, doesn't it. But I guess that's how the Okies felt, being forced from their homes and traveling all the way to California to try to find a livelihood.
