I have lived in Southern California my whole life and I am not scared of earthquakes at all. We get some smaller ones from time to time, but sometimes you don't even notice them. The big ones seem to be few and far between. Most buildings are braced for earthquakes and so when they do happen the structural damage isn't devastating.

Just educate yourself on what to do in the event of an earthquake. Most of us were taught to duck and cover under a sturdy desk or table as children.

Not many people die in earthquakes here. Any death is a tragedy but I hear far more about deaths resulting from winter storms in the midwest than earthquake related deaths here.

Good luck with your education!

There are drawbacks to living almost anywhere. Southern California is a garden of eden. (if you don't count the thugs) And they are everywhere also. The architecture is beautiful, the sun is warm year-round, there are no words to describe the beaches and of course, the ocean. I lived outside of San Diego for 18 years and if I could I would go back in an instant. You will get used to the quakes - everybody does. I hope you have a beautiful life out there! I envy you.

Earthquakes in California happen occasionaly but they are usually small ones that will knock something off of a table, like in the beginning of Freaky Friday.

I believe the last "killer" quake in LA area was Northridge in 1994. If there is no heavy table around, stand in the frame of a doorway.
