That's really a difficult situation. For someone who doesn't have that kind of experience, the obvious and easy answer would be - stay away from them. But it's not easy.

You didn't say if they're your close family members, but the mere fact that you have this dilemma implies that you care about these people no matter how close relatives you are.

Firs thing you have to do is accept them for who they are. I know it's difficult, but no matter what you do, you're not going to be able to change them. We can't change other people, we can only change ourselves, and hope that that will be enough to change our relationship with those people.

You have to be strong. If you love them than you know they love you too. Even if they don't treat you well sometimes. People do bad things to others to protect their own insecurities and get rid of anxieties. We all have defense mechanisms that protect our psyche, our ego, from things that might hurt it and hurt our well-being.

Don't take every bad word too personally. Remember it's just a reflection of their own insecurities. Stay close to them, but only for as long as you feel comfortable. Distance yourself when you feel you're about to get hurt.

It's your life. Don't let anyone control it for you. What can they possibly do to you if you don't let them?

Good luck!

Any friend or family member who wants you to stay where you are and not progress, does so because, either they're afraid you'll ask them for money or they just don't think you can do it.
It sucks but it's true.

I've heard of many successful people, actors, singers, inventors, etc, who have said that nobody in their family or friends thought they could do it, or they thought they were crazy for trying. I'm sure you've heard some of those people.

If anyone tries to convince you not to do something, ask them why they think it's a bad idea. That usually will convince you even more to do it.

And remember you can't fail until you quit.

Good luck.

You hold yourself from succeeding by being around such negative people, and you are correct, it WILL bring you down to their level. Remember, like success, misery loves company. I enjoy being around intelligent, positive thinking people who can actually make others laugh and feel good without even trying.

Go with what's in your own heart.

If you feel that you can make a difference, hang out with people much like yourself.

Oft times, those that continue to attempt to bring you down to their level, are envious people who know without a doubt that you can do better than themselves. It's an attempt to keep you where you are because their biggest fears are that you will "show them up".

Don't listen to those that attempt to bring you down, because real success of others is to glorify you in yours.

Remember this: "People who don't like you, fall in to two categories: 1) the stupid; & 2) the envious. The stupid may learn to like you eventually, but the envious never will!" :-)

Remain friendly to them, but keep your distance. If you have new things to share with them, don't.

what i would do is change my perception on things.

what i take on the not waning you to progress they are not realy focusing one how much progress you have but in fact the progress you have in comparison to their own aka competition. i think that instead of focusing on the other persons progression one should focus on passing their own self.
if your family doesnt want you to progress do you realy think that they are truely your family? it doesnt make since that a family would have pure hate one another or have you considered that it may just be another challenge and that when you succeed you will be that much stonger than when you started as well as a better person than them if you have not dont things to hinder them or you will just lower yourself to their level.

Be nice to them. Stay away from them as much as possible. Find positive, achievement oriented friends.
