It depends on your level of computer skill, the type of problem you are having, if the computer is still under warranty, etc.

If you do not have much experience, you will be more likely to want to go with a PC tech or a retail store that sells notebooks and does repairs, especially if it is a fairly complicated problem.

If it is a software/Windows problem, your computer may have some diagnostic tools (this could also point you to how complicated your problem is to determine next step), to help you begin troubleshooting.

Don't know where to begin? I have found SmartComputing to be an excellent source for computer help in plain English. For the price of the subscription you get access to a database where you can search for others who have had your problem, post a new problem, etc. They even have telephone tech support! You can't beat that deal!
