It's a front wheel drive car, it is most definately a CV joint. Generally the boot surrounding the joint will crack and all the grease comes out leaving the bearings really dry and they'll start to click. You'll be able to drive on it for awhile, but getting it fixed is most likely in your future. You generall don't need a whole new half-shaft, just a new CV joint. Any reputable repair shop should be able to take care of it for you.
And no.... your wheel wil NEVER fall off due to worn/blown CV joints. However, with time, it will incompacitate the car, making it impossible to drive.

It sounds like the CV joints or the ball joints are going. They're the bits inside your cars wheelbase that enables your car to turn. If this is the problem and it isn't repaired then I think the wheel could actually fall off but that only happens after qute a long time.

its true your cv joints are worn, more than likely its the right hand side outer one that's noisy. these can be replaced individually or as a complete shaft that can be bought as an exchange unit from £50 to £100 depending on your supplier

try a different garage because they might not be well enough trained, if this has only started recently its obviously a problem, my car did it and it was something to do with the rear suspension ball socket joints had rotted away and can be very dangerous it is also an mot failure

Its probably a Roll Arm Bush that needs replacing, ask the garage to check them specifically.
