In 1893, Sanford Dole organized a coup that overthrew Queen Liliuokalani. He wanted the U.S. to come in and annex Hawaii, but the President, Grover Cleveland, refused. Cleveland wanted the monarchy restored. Dole then declared Hawaii a republic. After the Spanish-American War and under the urging of President William McKinley, the U.S. annexed Hawaii in 1898 and then made it a territory in 1900.
