I've been looking for information on this matter and all I find is information on how to waterproof it when you already have the problem.
Isn't there a way to prevent it...?

USA There are several methods available to you, depending on what type construction you have. I will assume you have a masonry block foundation on top of a concrete footing.

Best: Dig around the foundation of the house, all the way down to a few inches below the top of the footing. Clean the foundation wall and install a waterproofing membrane on the block wall. Bituthene or Mira-Dry are good brand names. The stuff costs about $2 per square foot. You have to also buy a primer. It is like a thick paint - you brush it on the wall, let it dry until tacky, then apply the membrane. The membrane is to be installed from grade level down to and across the top of the footing. You do not have to go below the top of the footing. Then, lay geotextile filter fabric on the ground - it is three feet wide. Lay it all the way around the foundation, butted up to the edge of the footing, a few inches below the top of the footing. Place a few inches of #2 or #57 stone on top of the fabric, about 2" deep, and 10" to 12 " wide. Then, install a perforated drain pipe - commonly called a drain tile, on top of the stone. Run the pipe to daylight if you have enough slope to your property, or to a storm drain. Place at least 12" up to 24" of stone on top of the pie, and fold the remaining filter fabric cloth over the top of the stone. This fabric will "encase" the stone and pipe, preventing fines and dirt from getting into and blocking the pipe.

That is the best way - and the most expensive. To save some money, you can substitute an asphalt coating for the waterproofing membrane. But put the asphalt coating on heavy, and when it dries to tacky, install a minimum 6 mil thick plastic sheet over it, from grade down to the top of the footing. Roll or brush the plastic sheet in place to get full contact with the asphalt coating. Install the drain tile.

Check out these manufacturers: Bituthene by W. R. Grace, and Carlisle. Or visit a building supply store - but NOT home depot. They don't know too much.
