I have had £1500 unexpectedly deposited into my Barclays personal account.

How do I find out who has deposited this money and why?

If it has been accidentally deposited, (from the brief details on the statement it looks like a big company, that I have no recollection of dealing with, has deposited it there), is it legally mine?

Early last year I had £20'000 deposited in my Nationwide account from a company who deal with foreign payments. Six months later when they realised they issued a recall of funds after I'd spent £2300 of it apparently they can do that and they made me pay it back and it caused me an awful lot of personal trouble. Phone the bank and get it sorted out or at the very least don't spend the money it'll be more aggro than its worth.

The best option for you is to notify the bank so that they can take it back. Consider these three reasons:
1- Put yourself in the position of the officer that committed the mistake. It may have a negative impact on his career.
2-Think of the original intended recipient. He might be expecting the money badly and probably need it for something urgent.
3-The bank will eventually discover and find a way of getting it back from you. You will end up paying it back at the time when you probably need money for something very important and cannot afford to lose a Penny.

It isn't legally yours and the bank can withdraw it so don't touch it until you have spoken to the bank. If it is deemed to be your money get the bank to write to you saying just that before you touch it or you are liable to pay it back if you do. The bank may enquire on your behalf with the company, but remember big companies don't give money away, check it isn't a loan or something like that.

No its not legally yours so I would not spend it. If you did spend it you would be liable for interest until you could pay it back.

Best thing to do would be to leave it in there until the bank realizes they have made a mistake, you might just make a bit of interest off it.

Nope its not yours. Get in touch with the bank because if you spend it you will only be asked to give the money back. Better to sort it out now rather than later.

Spend it dont say a thing! Mmm such a dilemma!!

Seriously though, just let the bank know they will do the rest they'll take it back out without your consent when they realise if you dont let them know soon.

Dont know if it is legally yours, but keeping it would surely be legally wrong (somehow)

The money is not yours, I do not know how you stand legally. but from a moral point of view if you keep the money you are in the wrong, give the money back and have a good sleep at n ight

Go to the bank, and tell them you think it may be an error because as soon as you spend it they are going to want it back. Hopefully its some investment you dont remember good luck

No it wasn't for you as you weren't expecting it so be up front and tell the bak you've had it paid but its not fot you.. If necessary contact the sender and let them know..

It does'nt hurt to be honest, but it hurts more to be greedy and end up spending the money knowing it was never for you and having to pay back more in the long run.
