What major are you looking at? That would help in my answer.
I don't know what was meant by the previous poster's comment about 50% Asian. Cal Poly has a very active Chinese Student Association (CSA) Club that is open to everyone. In the long run, does it really matter?
Just goes to show that you don't need to be a genius to go to UC Davis.
To be honest, both are good schools. Depends on your academic goals (Ph.D. go to Davis, BS or MS go to Cal Poly), major and what you want off-campus.
Both are originally Ag schools.

I would choose UC Davis, for a few reasons. FIrst of all, I went there and it is a great school, and academically it rivals Berkeley. There are no "impacted" majors, so you can change your major easily if you so desire. Cal Poly, on the other hand, is made up of all impacted majors from what I understand. That means that you are stuck in the major you applied for, and if you change your mind at some point (as many people do) then it is nearly impossible to change your major.
Also, Davis is a lot more diverse than Cal Poly. It is not the most diverse school (that honor goes to San Jose State) but there are a considerable number of ethnic groups, which means good food, a lot of diversity-based clubs, and a variety of perspectives available on all aspects of life. Cal Poly is nearly 100% white. As my coworker said, who is Chinese and went to Cal Poly, "Something is wrong with a school that isn't at least 50% Asian." While many people may not agree with that, it is odd for a school in California. Most of the people from my high school who went there were cowboy/rodeo types.
But I hope you get a chance to visit both campuses before making a decision.
Edit: That comment was made by a coworker, not me. He was a Chinese American student at Cal Poly and felt like an extremely small minority there. I said that many people may not agree with that because I personally have not experienced Cal Poly and am not going to make statements like that. If you think I am an idiot for something someone else sarcastically said, then my bad.
