Im getting my xp home laptop updated to xp pro since pro has more features I like to use. My question: Is there a way or program that lets computers outside of the network (over the internet) to look at files on it. I already use Hamachi and I'm not talking about a remote desktop thing (like LogMeIn). I want it so it can host files from about 8 computers, 3 of which will be on the local network, the rest over the internet. Also, I want it to send out updates for trend micro OfficeScan to all the client computers (local and over the internet).

Now that you have Hamachi, it should be a simple matter of folder sharing in XP and having either a common username/password on all XP machines, or creating an account for each person on each computer (but that would be a bit of a nightmare to manage.)

Because you're less than 10 people, you can actually use XP Pro as a file server, and have everyone connect to one XP file share. Just create 8 user accounts on that one box.

Then be sure to get nightly or at least weekly backups of that shared drive!

you need to set up a computer in the network as a fileserver and open a port (usually port 80) from it to the outside world by putting forwarding a port at the router. You will want to be a secure as possible, because you are allowing the net to access the computer. I would use a port like 3465 and a password so that it is less likely to be found.

here is a fileserver that is quick and free: http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/

and a port forwarding guide is here:

Hi ssavoy,

You you can open a folder up for sharing. This will make it available to anyone who connects to your computer.

Right click the folder you want to share, select "Properties" then "Sharing" and check "Share This Folder.
