I would say closes to STL metro would be creve couer lake. Its technically in the county, but not so far. Others have suggested Carlyle. For the same distance you can look at Silver lake in Highland, Yeager Lake in Litchfield, Lake Kinkaid, or Rend Lake. Both Rend and Kinkaid are in Southern Illinois. Kinkaid is more western then Rend.

I grew up in South St. Louis County (Mehlville) and Mehlville and Oakville are sturdy aspects south. Southwest and West counties are sturdy as nicely (Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Manchester). I stay in Southwest St. Louis city now (Southhampton community) and Southhampton and St. Louis Hills are the nicest aspects of the city...and merely a jiffy from the different aspects i discussed. so some distance as faculties, South, Southwest and West counties seem the utmost rated aspects.
