Historically, the Yankees are the better team. They have all those championships, legendary players, and the like.
Today, the Red Sox are the better team. They have a fan base that extends the entire country (Red Sox Nation). Basically, to the Yankees, they have been the underdog for 100 years. 2004 embarrassed the Yankees and their fans, and has evened the playing field as far as the teams battling each other right now. They play almost exact .500 ball against each other. It's just great to watch and be a part of.
Now, someone said the Yankees have fans across the country? Oh, so blind. Don't they realize that if you're not a Yankee fan, regardless of what team you route for, everyone HATES the Yankees? The Yankees are everything that is wrong with baseball, as far as big market=big spending. I suppose it's not their fault, but it still sucks to the fans of the other 29 teams.

Can we say neither?
It doesn't take a genius to spend money and Boston has done their best to keep up with the Yankees, but now the Yankees are realizing that it's not working.
Boston will too some day. The average salary for a team was $69 mil, if either had only $69 million to spend, what would their teams look like.
Pitching staff,
Yankees have a pretty bad starting staff and have to rely on the bullpen a lot. Boston's staff is really no better. Beckett and Clement were thought to be keys coming from the NL and I bet they both wish they could be back there. Schilling, like Mussina, getting on in age. Papelbon, while awesome as a closer last year is still a ? in a ML rotation and if people are relying on Joel Pinero to close, that should worry everyone, not just Red Sox fans.
Offence is still in the Yankee's favour though, that's what you get when you put a marquis player at most positions, but the faith both teams put in their catchers to continue their offence will be their undoing.
The biggest issue with both teams (more so the Yankees) is that their fans seem to think they are somehow 'owed' the world series and they somehow deserve it more than anyone else.
I would say Oakland and Minnesota are far more impressive than either Boston or New York because of the budget they must do it on.

I will pick the Red Sox.They have made some major changes and outside of the closer situation and the health of JD Drew there aren't too many questions heading into the season. The yankees ahve the better farm system but the Yankees will have to dip into that system because of injury more likely because of the age of their starting rotation not to mention the age of their closer.Even if you believe all of what you have heard about Clemens rejoinning the yankees,he will not be the same pitcher he was with the Astros because of the better lineups in the A.L.

I am going to have to say the Sox. They have great pitching after the addition of Dice-K, and Lugo, Youkilis, Ortiz, Manny, Drew is going to be deadly this year if they can all stay healthy. They are going to score a lot of runs, because they have 3 guys that could hit 4th in almost any lineup. The Yankees have a solid lineup, but they just keep getting older, and their rotation is really thin and hurting. I think if the Red Sox stay healthy, which is a big if, they will contend for the World Series. The only bump in the road for Boston could be the fact that they dont have a closer, but they could get one by trade, or if Papelbon struggles, I dont think they would hesitate to throw him back into the closer role which he perfected last year. They are both going to be solid teams this year, but I think the Red Sox did enough in the offseason to push them over the Yankees for now.

I think currently as the teams are formulated you have to give a slight edge to the Yankees. They have question marks at the end of the rotation where as the Sox have a GIANT question mark at the end of the bullpen. I think you if ask the question again in July at about the half way point, a lot of the question markes going into the season will be answered. I think if you're talking overall, the Yankees have 26 Championships, the Sox have 6

I am not a fan of either but I would have to say right now the Yankees have a slight edge. They return a line up that beat up Bostons pitchers last year. Dice K is an unknown he maybe great he maybe average. I do not like new players Boston brought in I do not think that theywill help them catch the Yankees. So I will go with the Yankees, however I don't think the Yankees have a team that can win the WS either.

Ive been a yankees fan my enitre life, but i will enjoy watching them alot more this year. Cashman did a lot with the team, getting rid of some older injury pron players with unreasonably big contracts, i.e. Gary Sheffiled. They have some young talent coming into their own on the team that makes them exciting to watch. With players like Cano and Cabrerra, and Wang and Hughes, the future is bright for the club and the future is now. They have a formidable line up with players like Abreu and Rodriguez posed to have huge seasons. Cant wait to see what Giambi will do as a full time DH and Mientkiewiczhas looked solid all spring in the feild and at the plate. With a healthy starting rotation of Mussina, Pettitte, Wang and Pavano(yes Pavano) the yankees have a great chance to break their 7 year itch w/o a ring.

I, like the Yankees because of the offense especially Jeter, A-Rod and Giambi and there pitching is pretty decent too.
The Red Sox, I think have a good rotation but their closer role is unsettled and with the exception of Ortiz and Ramirez, their offense is somewhat weaker than the Yankees.
It will as always come down to September and who gets hot and the key will be on how much the Yankees can get from pitchers Pavano and/or Phil Hughes.
I look forward to an interesting race!!!
