Well, when I was there we had a car and went to both on the Autobahn. Not sure about public trans tho. If you like to ski, Innsbruck -- Stubaier Gletscher: was AMAZING.

If you like old world charm and, of course, MOZART then Salzburg for sure. Actually, I think the latter is closer to Vienna so if you have only one day then think about how much time you want to spend in transit.

Out of the two cities I would recommend Salzburg, as it has more culture. Salzburg is the Mozart town.
Travel shouldn't take longer than 4 hours one way, but both cities are a bit far away for a day trip. They are on the other side of Austria after all.

Why don't you go to Bratislava instead? Take the speed boat from Schwedenplatz in Vienna. Travel time is only 1 hour and Bratislava is very beautiful. You also see Austria the way it should be seen: from the Danube.

Austrian Airlines has a direct flight between Vienna and Innsbruck - takes about 35 minutes total and there are some lovely views of the Alps!
