Start by defining "average tire" because it matters as to quality, load range, and a whole host of factors.
http://www.idavette.net/tire_wheel/tire_myths.htm will tell you lots about tires, give it a quick read.

Depends upon the way you drive on them. When properly inflated and rotated the last user is correct 75,000 to 100,000 miles on average, even on the cheapest set of tires.
However, if you're swerving in and out of traffic, taking off at high speeds, long drives where the tires get really hot, or doing copious amounts of braking ( and that includes you out there whom tail gate -- word to the wise -- they actually increase the chances of not only getting in a wreck but influence how the tires perform because of heat from their brakes -- the heat buildup can do a LOT to destroy tire performance overall within a VERY short amount of time.
Weather and poor road conditions -- ESPECIALLY ROUTE 295 in Glen Allen, Virginia, where the roads are less usable than ones in Afganistan...I've seen motorcyclists hit pot holes and fall down in front of me and slide down the road on their @ss on this route -- truckers avoid it like the plague -- they have very good reason to -- very scary, but good if you enjoy video game style driving Route 295 is great fun but very hard on the front end balance which destroys tires also... !!!
Mostly, the driver determines how long his/her tires will last -- It never fails to give me a good chuckle when I hear about how person X's tires have to be replaced every six months, after hearing him talk about how fast he can go up and down route 95...
Just ONE rotation of a spinning tire on the payment during a peelout wears off 10,000 miles !!!
Treat your tires nicely and they will treat you well. Treat them poorly and they'll influence how much money comes out of your wallet for the tires AND the car...
