If #2 lead is the one everyone likes most. Why isn't it #1?

Pencil leads are numbered according to how soft or hard they are, not according to how many people prefer them. Number 1 is the softest. As the numbers go higher, the leads get harder.
Number 1 is too soft for most practical purposes. Number 2 turns out to be just right for everyday writing, though some folks prefer their leads a little harder, like number 3. The other number leads tend to be used by artists only. They're not very good for everyday use.
