try installing a legacy driver for it cross your fingers and hope vista recognizes it as a native device

create a system restore point

ctrl panel - "device manager"
click on the device (unknown device)
File-menu - "Action"
"Install legacy driver"
follow prompts and attempt to install using an XP driver

It depends on the adapter you have.
Some do show Vista drivers but not many.
