I was in Egypt in 2000 and they accepted dollars because they get more for it. I suggest you rather use Egyptian pounds because if you do some calculations you'll find that you pay more for a product/meal in dollars than you would when paying in the local currency. I bought a hubbly bubbly pipe for 60 dollars, only to find a similar one elsewhere charged in the local currency, I did the math and discovered the other shop made a lot of pounds because I used dollars, so I lost out!

most good hotels have banks with in the hotels and they will change your money to egyptian pounds which is the local currency and of course accepted everywhere. there are also banks in most main streets. if you try to use dollars on the street, first of all of course they cannot give you change and secondly it may be illegal. But you will get a good rate of exchange by changing in egypt almost certainly better than you get by changing before you come. take a small amount with you in EP and the rest in dollars and change as needed. i have been there many times this information is correct. there are also ATM's in most big towns which do work with visa etc most of the time. but take care they are not always reliable.

Local currency is better. US dollars are accepted only in hotels, tourism and the free shops. Otherwise if sellers or shops accept it, that's always in their favor and you lose. You can change every day from the bank in most 5 stars hotels and all banks or exchange companies. All banks works till 2 PM closed (Saturday and Friday). Private companies and banks inside hotels have their own opening and closing times.
Welcome in Egypt
