If it's the 1997 to 1999 model year Escorts, the belt tension is extremely tight, making belt failures common. Another fairly common porblem is for the crankshaft pulley to fall apart causing the belt to fall apart.

Yes, Check that the belt hasn't jumped the pulleys or broken.
If the belt is intact & in decent condition,
Check:
1. Misalignment [one of the componants (A/C - PS Air Pump) may be loose]
2. Inspect pulley belt tentioner, crank & idler pulleys
Good Luck

Of course it will start spinning with the engine, it is run by the engine. If the battery light is on, there are other possibilities than the battery. I would recommend taking this to a professional repair facility.

yes. the belt controls many aspect of your cars power. steering, alt., recharging the battery, water pump ect. i believe 1 of your pulleys would be frozen for the belt not to be running. but without the serpentine belt you will have no pwr steering, battery recharging, water pump ect. dont let her drive it! good luck!

Change your power steering pump or add power steering fluid, your serpentine belts always run with your motors.

yes it should turn over every time the car is running,if it doesn't there's something bad wrong with it,you may have something locked up on it causing it not to turn when the engine is running on it,check it out good, because you cant drive it like this, good luck hope this helps.
