Gender refers to language. It is the politically correct way of saying sex.

People are not of a particular gender, they are of one sex, or another. Gender refers to how a word is differentiated in a language.

I hate this misuse of language!

For certain jobs gender does make a difference, weather it is strength that is required or body searching individuals in a prison/security environment. Certain facilities ie., toilets, wash rooms etc., are only shared by different sexes.
Any and all job applications in USA requires the applicant to state their gender. It also serves as a means of identification. Medical needs are not the same for all genders. Ladies washroom lounges always have more facilities than men's rooms.

the distinction is obvious in terms of our appearance.

so the term itself would be useful more on paper

like most other variables it is just a way of defining ones gender.
