What is the best kind of filter to use sand or cartrige?

Having some trouble with the filter!!

I used to have a pool and we used the cartridge kind ,it lasted for a long time and was easy to clean, you just unscrew the top of the filter and take it out let it dry in the sun then take a hose to it rinse all the dirt away.
