Well, first off, there is no such thing as a coupe convertible. A coupe is a hard top fixed roof while a convertible is... well, you get the picture! And while I am still well shy of 50 (and happily in great shape, though perhaps the hair on top is a little thinner than I'd like), I do get it! I am not sure I can say anything that will allow you to "get it." But here it goes:
First, the performance. There is a practical aspect to high performance. The car is more manueverable and capable of merging and changing lanes. But really, few things about a high performance car come down to it being practical. And it doesn't often matter that it can go so fast so quickly in terms of actually having to do it. It matters that it can if you should ever want to. And there is also a good chance that many of these people you see in Ferraris or similar cars have no interest in speeding around on public roads. But they may take the cars to race tracks and drive them in quite an aggressive manner.
A Ferrari is a beautiful car! And for many people one of the first cars we may have seen as a child that made us go "wow." It sits in a primal memory, popping back up as a sudden desire when you see that flash of red running across the road or hear that beautiful V12 (or V8 in some cases). It's something many fat balding 50 year olds have been waiting nearly 50 years to afford!
It's not about getting perverse pleasure in making someone else jealous, but it is about the pleasure of owning something that means something to the owner. Though, if you would even think it's just about making someone else jealous, or that cruising along in a Town Car or such would somehow be better, then you are right. You don't get it.

there is a hint of jealousy in the air. If i was 50, fat, bald, and could afford a ferrari i would not give a damn what other people thought. I wouldn't have time to care, actually, cause i'd be too busy gettin "road head" from some 20 y.o. who likes my sweet ride and my sweaty palms.

You are quite right, There should be a weight test before anybody be allowed to buy a Ferrari, An we should pass laws that forbid bald men from having one.

Love this question! It's ludicrous, isn't it? And you're right, a high performance car is wasted in the U.S. I agree it's how they maintain their perceived 'alpha male' status. Think of it as the 'peacock syndrome' -- in nature the male of the species has to flash his tail feathers in order to attract attention; in this case, since they're not physically attractive, they flash their cash instead. It's all about 'da bling' and a denial of aging. Unfortunately 'cash' doesn't equal class!

you obviously havent got it. the secret to life is the survival of the fittest, size notwithstanding. check out history and you will see that looks, size, etc dont matter. what matters is the current manner of survival. in today's world, it's money. so, the ferraris belong to the moneyed. interestingly, not all 50+ men are potbellied blah blah blah.......and they have ferraris they fit into very comfortably.
