There are several different kinds of selling and buying personalities. You will attract the customers who are turned off by the pushy people. Some people will go with them because they respond to the pushy style. Don't try and become something you are not. There are tons of people out there who are just like you and will appreciate a more low key approach.

Personally, I hate pushy sales people. The more they are pushy, the more I won't buy. And if I want, I can spread my bad impressions with them to my other friends so they're gonna have bad impressions too. Actually, my other friends hate pushy sales people as well. Based on experience, there's this small stall of a family savings something in the middle of a mall near us. They will just stop passers by to ask if they have credit cards, and they will really become pushy if they're ignored. They would even touch you as if you two are "close". I hate being touched by total strangers especially by pushy sales people. They would also shout, "mam!" at you even if you're a couple of feet away. It's really annoying. I also hate those salespeople because they lack courtesy. For example, it's proper to call women, "ms." whatever age they look like. Well, those sales people don't do that. They do it on how you actually look. I was once called Mrs. when I'm actually single 21 yrs old. It's really annoying and so unethical.
There are a lot of ways to attract customers without being pushy that it's becoming annoying. If you're gonna be pushy, proper manners should be kept in mind to different kinds of people, no matter what. And please, no touching+being pushy at the same time because a lot of people hate that. And if the target person looks like s/he meant that it's a 'no', then the sales person should just stop and respect that. Sales persons should be sensitive since their job relies big time on people and good impressions. You don't have to be pushy if you don't want to though. I agree that the quality of service is most important but in some ways, a little bit of marketing will also help add impressions from others. But of course, it depends if you're going to be pushy and annoying like the others. There are other ways of approaching customers, you don't have to be pushy.

You should be proud of yourself for being the person you are. There's nothing wrong with the way you handle clients. You are doing fine.Don't change a thing. When I get a pushy sales person I get downright rude with them. And push them around. No one needs to tell me how to spend my money or what I need. When I go to purchase something I know exactly what I want and how much I will spend.

Look i dunno about nails, but i know about sales.
Look at it this way, The customer wants what your selling. Even if they don't know it.
Otherwise they wouldn't have walked into your store.
You can sell plenty without being pushy trust me, but if you don't try to sell it to them they aren't gonna try and buy it :)
Try Making reccomendations and be very reassuring. Like you said, you hafta sell yourself before you can sell anything else.
Dish out compliments like candy (oh wow that looks great)
sell with your opinion (ya know what else would look really nice)
The fact is, if you were selling as much as the other girls in your salon, they wouldn't be pushing you to change your tactics.
If you are than don't worry about it.

I believe you need to adapt to their selling styles. It's society. If you can't have a better place to work then you might as well settle at where you are right now. Even if you don't like what these people are doing, you still have to listen to them because you are working for them.

Kill them with compliments. Your nails would look so good with blah blah blah. Why don't we go ahead and blah blah blah blah. WHen ever you ask something you want a yes answer to, shake your head yes while you ask it. You won't believe the results. You can practice at home with your husband or your kids. Shake your head yes when you ask a question you want a yes to. Also works when you want a no... shake your head no as you ask the question. The people you're talking to won't even realize you're doing it and they'll shake their head just like you're doing and agree with you more often then not.

Pushy doesn't have to mean obnoxious. "Can I interest you in ..." is a polite question that allows you to upsell.
