Destroying the earth and a complete disregard for the welfare of others will destroy the human race and the earth. Mother Nature will strike back.
I see no evidence that the human race is striving for perfection. A perfectionist would go crazy trying to straighten out that mess in Iraq.

In my opinion, it is inevitable that eventually we will cause something or build something that will lead to our destruction. For example, if you've ever seen "The Matrix," humans invent artificial intelligence that eventually destroys the human race. In our quest to make lives easier, we will eventually invent something that we will become dependent on, thus leading to our demise. Hopefully not for a long time though. lol

People are animals, and I'm not speaking metaforically. We are simply animals. Our closest relative is the chimpanzee.
We were created thanks to the proces of evolution, as was the rest of the living world. Evolution has only 2 goals: survival and reproduction. We (the human race) aren't really trying to become perfect. We're trying to survive (most of us also want our lives to be enjoyable and pleasant) and we're desperatly trying to reproduce (or have sex, which would now be the same thing because evolution is a slow process while society and technology develop rather quickly).
Saying that we're trying to perfect ourselves is like saying that chimps are trying to perfect themselves. It might seem like we want to become perfect, but technological development is a way we improve our chances of survival (medicine for example) and reproduction (wealthier men attract more women, they are reproductively more valuable.
I'd have to say your statement is FALSE.

Full of sarcasm, no? How we are our own destroyers...because we are ignorant and don't care, because we like to think things are good when they aren't. Open your eyes people!!!

I think it is false.
with trying to better ourselves we do become better.
with the way technology advances we will catch up to it. despite popular belief I do not think we will destroy ourselves.
