I can start my truck but the steering column is locked and does not allow you to shift into gear. Possibly the brake sensor connected to the steering column.

I think you are on the right track as the system you refer to is called the brake shift interlock system. This requires that you step on the brake before being able to select any transmission operation. The system is energized by the brake switch, but not in the brake light circuit. It has its own circuit. This you can usually hear working as if the brake switch works, the solenoid inside the column or on the floor shifter will click. If it does, the power and brake switch supply to the solenoid as well as the solenoid are okay. This will then be a physical problem with the solenoid cable or locking bar. It will have to be dis-assembled to find out what has happened. Don't try to force as you will wreck more than is already faulty. These were usually the fault of the brake switch. My advice would be to go to the dealership and get some electrical schematics for diagnosis. Good luck.

If it has a Tilt steering wheel, check to see if it has some "play". The U-joint in the column might be binding up the shift mechanics. Is it on a hill?

Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance. At thew site below you can look up what maybe wrong, if too cheap to buy the book.

i own a repair shop ,and it sounds like the shift linkage has come loose on it,that will cause this,it will let you start it but not shift in to any gear,id try looking at the linkage, and see if it has come loose on it anywhere, that would be the main cause of that happening, good luck i hope this helps.

Your shift cable may be loose, disconnected or broken, you would need a mechanic to find that out though
