Our local YMCA has babysitting classes all the time, and so does the park and recreation department.
I took child care classes in high school, but that was a very long time ago, and I don't know if they are still offered. I do know that there are classes at the community college near me.
Also try your local Women Care center, and find out about classes there.
I had a job in the day care center at the health club a couple of years ago. There were a lot of high school girls there, who worked in the afternoon and evening. There were two grandma's who worked the morning shift, me and one other.
You can contact your Red Cross or Fire station for child care CPR classes. It's usually just a one day class. You also should look online for a list of things a good babysitter will want to know.

When I used to babysit it was always word of mouth. I had a friend who babysat on a regular basis and when she could not do it, she'd recommend me for it. If the person liked me, they'd recommend me to their friends etc. I've also had neighbors or family members do the same thing with their friends. I've never heard of any classes but a CPR certification would be a good thing to have. I've seen ads in newspapers and I've also seen ads in local grocery stores.
