Recently I got promoted with bigger pay packages and managed to get the brand new company car, company phone, etc..., alongside with more responsibility. Fun for a while but...

I'm working longer hours these days, my clients could call me any minute and I'm taking work home most of the time..

Perhaps I should stand down and give myself more time to do other stuff....? What's more important - money or freedom?

You need to find the balance that's right for you.

It sounds like you would like to have more time to do other things, so my advice would be to set limits on how much time you will devote to your work. You could also set a time each day that you will not be reachable by cell phone.

It's definitely a tradeoff: setting these limits will mean you will not be quite as successful at work as you might like, but you will have the opporunity to be successful in other areas of your life and ultimately be a happier, more balanced person.

Also, you might want to take a look at how you are spending your money to see if there are areas where you can cut back (dinners out, gournet coffee, cars, vacations, etc.) If you can put a few hundred dollars towards paying off debts or investing in mutual funds (like Vanguard) each month, you will eventually have more financial freedom, which will give you more flexibility when it comes to work.

Good luck!

The what's more important is your call. Did you not realize this is what would happen when you applied for the promotion? The company has probably already filled your old position so it is unlikely they will let you step down and return to it.

I'm not sure how many people ask themselves his question. Certainly I did not until mid-life when there were a lot of things going on around me - complicating factors like kids and a mortgage.

I think at least one of my kids witnessed the dilemma I faced and I notice how clear she has been in drawing a boundary around her private/family life and making sure that her work serves that, rather than the other way around. That benchmark may be one for you to consider too.

"What's more important - money or freedom?"

Only you can answer that.
