Castor oil is a commonly recommended method of inducing labour by midwives. It does not work for all people, though, and only has a chance of working if your body is ready to go into labour anyways.
There are risks associated with taking castor oil to jump start labour. The baby is more likely to release it's meconium.
I did this, and was lucky... my daughter let go of her meconium after her head was born, so she didn't happen to consume any of it. Could have been disastrous though.
Should you decide to take castor oil, take about 2 teaspoons of it. Gulp it down fast, chase it with some OJ/Lemonaid/Milk and then eat crackers. The texture of it is horrible, and often causes some women to vomit.
You will have cramps and the poops for a few hours before your labor starts, if it starts.
Remember... the longer your baby cooks in your belly, the better. Due dates can be off by 2 weeks either way... ultrasounds are often wrong. You potentially have a 37 weeker in there that you are trying to evict.

Well, you'll get terrible stomach cramps and have diarrhea for awhile if you take it. That's what will start the labor. I would mix a teaspoon or two into a smoothie every three or four hours and see if that helps. If nothing in an hour or two, I'd do it again. I'd start with other remedies first--something that won't dehydrate you. Eat spicy foods, have sex with an orgasm--the orgasm might start contractions, the sperm will soften the cervix. I'd also walk a lot, pump on the swings, go up and down some stairs, or sit on an exercise ball and rock around on it so the baby moves down and pushes up against the cervix. If that fails, THEN I'd maybe try the castor oil.

My OB/GYN told me that all castor oil will do is make your bowels move a lot plus uncomfortable abdominal cramps. Your body hormones control when it's time for baby to be born. It sounds like you are very near time now. So enjoy the short time you have left to pamper yourself and get things in order. Believe me, after the babe is born, you won't have time or energy for much of anything.
Good luck and best wishes with your little one!

Castor Oil is a NO NO. Taking it can cause you child to have a bowel movement while it the womb. This can cause HUGE problems for you AND the baby. Try having sex and walking a lot.

Hey, castor oil during this period seems something strange in my thoughts, at this stage you must eat good fresh fruits, green vegetables, juices, do some exercise, walk & stay happy. Also stay happy, keep yourself away from bad things.
Keep your self cool & think positive, try to be nautral. Best of luck.

Castor oil is not really a good idea. Sometimes it makes you think you're in labor, but you're not. Plus it's very uncomfortable!
