Steroid use is on the decline. Just look at the drop in power numbers. The big sluggers are still getting their blasts, but you don't see the punch and judy hitters suddenly finding a power stroke. The emphasis on speed is increasing. Moreover, believe it or not, baseball players are not stupid. With regular testing the cost benefit analysis for chemical enhancement is leaning against the risk of being caught. Finally, more information is available to the players. More and more now consider the health risk before they are tempted to experiment.

Here's the thing, steroids were not illegal in baseball until a few years ago. It's not only steroids, but all performance enhancing substances. Some athletes test positive for steroids without knowing, I don't remember the player but there was an NHL goalie that was using a prescription to help grow hair on his head and that was technically a steroid.
Steroids for personal gain in sports is on the decline because of the pressure before from Anti Doping Agencies and the tougher rules with each collective bargaining agreement on banned substances.
If Bonds and company had taken steroids before, you may lose respect for the player, but the sport is to blame for not banning the substances before. If a player hit 600 home runs in his career and he retired before the new rules on steroids and banned substances went into effect then everything he took was perfectly LEGAL in the sport.
Then there is no need for an * next to names and records because they were never caught doing something wrong at the time. If there is a urine cup with Bonds' **** in it somewhere from 2001 you may prove he did steroids or took something that is now banned but that's as far as it goes. Baseball made nothing to say it was wrong before so they can't go back and nay-say the players they embraced for their success whether or not they did something that is now banned.

I think the use of anabolic steroids will certainly be on a sharp decline, due to the stigma and now the tougher penalties, however, with no current test for HGH or Human Growth Hormone, that is accurate enough to use, I can certainly see more players going to this. At least until the next big thing comes along. Players are always looking for that edge.

Now that they are detectable, I'd say steroid use in on the decrease.
Unfortunately, Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which in undetectable by testing, is on the upswing.
Just ask Giambi, Sheffield, and Bonds...they'll fill you in.

I think that with all the publicity and greater random testing, lees people will be apt to use steroids.I agree with you that those who have been convicted of using steroids should have their achievements asterisked.

I think players will not use them as much anymore. If they get cought it could ruin their whole reputation(not that I'd care). As for putting an asterik next to Bonds name I don't agree. They should just erase he records completley.

It's certainly decreasing as players switch to substances that are very difficult to detect.
