I have a 1997 Ford Explorer and every little move I make, It squeaks like crazy and it is getting worse. I was told that I may need to get the upper ball joints replaced (whatever that is) is that expensive? The SUV also just recently started turning off when i'm driving, but starts back when I take the key out and insert it back in, I was told that the chip in my key could be bad and its expensive to replace. Is that true? Someone please help, only mature answers are welcomed.

What engine? Is it the 4.0L OHV V6, 4.0L SOHC V6, or 5.0L V8? Upper control arms are fairly common for causing a VERY loud squeaking noise WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. What exactly do you mean by a chip in the key causing the problem? If it's the 4.0L OHV V6, or the 5.0L V8, it could be the cam sensor synchronizer seizing up that's causing the squeaking sound, IF IT'S HEARD WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.

The squeak may be many things but likely causes are stabilizer links, struts and or mounts, other suspension and steering components. The problem with the dying while driving must be evaluated by a professional repair facility because there are many, many, many possibilities. An intermittent failure of the RFID inside the key is possible, but extremely unlikely. I would lean more towards a fuel issue or losing ignition because of a failing sensor, coil, module, etc. At this point, all of this is just guessing, and anyone who gives you advice about fixing these things as a likely culprit has no clue.

Go to a trusted garage or shop. I would bite the bullet and go to Ford, I found allot or TSB's on your 1997 Ford. Ford would be able to repair you vehicle and replace the problem key(s) and reference all the recalls and TSBs.

I know it would be more expensive but they should know all the TSB and recalls and make sure the correct and updated parts are put on.

TSB are Technical Service Bulletins put out by the manufacturer or the NTSB, It has the latest updates and repair info for a particular vehicle.
