You can't outbid yourself. They put a proxy bid which means that they listed the highest price they are willing to pay. When you or someone else bid, they already said they would pay higher, thus showing them as the high bidder. They were not the one driving up the price, you were.

While eBay is an established flea market site, some of its rules and/or programming is questionably amateurish.
They don't really outbid themselves, just that the guy bidded like max $20 for some item, later he changed his mind that he's willing to pay $30 max, eBay recorded that as someone outbid self. I think it is quite fair if you realized that.

The 3 people who answered are right....you cannot outbid yourself. Timing is everything when winning the auction. Dont bid early and drive up prices. A great way to avoid this is to snipe the auction. Go to bidnip.com----thats where i go to place all my bids--and I have much better success rate!!! They bid for you a few seconds before the auction ends. Check them out-- I swear by them!!!
Good Luck!!!

Yeah, he probably really wanted the camera, so as a safety net for him, he kept bidding to keep the cost high. But I don't think you can bid against yourself in Ebay, unless someone else bids a higher amount - I know you can enter a high maxiumum price for an item, but the current bid won't show your maximum high price, just the current high bid.

If that person had set the highest bid and other people bid lower amounts, it would drive his bid up. It might appear that he bid more but really it was somebody else that placed a bid and raised the amount of the current bid.

They weren't just outbidding themselves. E-bay has a feature where when you bid you can set your highest bid, and if someone bids but doesn't go above yours, they rebid for you, until someone bids higher than you put you wanted to.
