This is very interesting question. Once you decide and come to conclusion who is dear to you, the next best thing is left to you is to be close to him all the time.
Here you need to adjust with him or her who is dear to you. You need to be the way he/she wants to be. In all, you need to change entirly and be his/her very close.
See if it works. It should. But let his/her freedom be free.
