no matter how much money you have, if you are starting a business from scratch it needs to be something you have an interest in, are skilled in etc and have a passion for!
so stick to something you are good at and know something about otherwise you are just going to struggle!

well money isn't the only thing that you have to have to start a business. you need to be good at something or be very knowledgeble at something. Brainstorm a bunch of things and see what you are best at and think of some problems you might have. You certainly don't want to start a business, lose 5k and even more money you owe to angry customers just because you got the business idea on Yahoo! answers. whhen you tell that to your friends, you'll be humiliated.

do some research into what is needed in your area, as well as finding out waht interests you. A new business is a huge time, money and time commitment, don't get into it without giving it a lot of thought, a business you really care about will be far more likely to succeed

My husband and I have an online/offline retail business that might work for you. I can't give you details here since it's against the rules of this site but send me an email if you'd like more information.

with 5k not a lot, go to your bank with an idea and you should get them to match your 5k,
as far as which biz, you have to decide coz no one is going to tell you how to become rich, they will do it themseves,
what interests do you have? self employed builder etc is comparatively inexpensive to start but a lot of competion,
have you done biz course? its imperative
good luck

lawn mowing or house painting.
You could get cheap labor, high schoolers, and use most of your time getting more jobs. You would only have to supervise them minimally.
