Try the Rome 390 bindings.
The 390 Binding by Rome. Lightened up for 2007, the 390 returns for a second year of quick response and finesse-oriented flex. The combination of the underwrap heel hoop’s powerful leverage and the mid-range flex of the new lightweight 390 highback results in blend of direct power and modulating support. With an anti-toedrag profile, the ConFormist.2 toe strap provides designed customization with any boot model in the market.

I used to have a Forum recon board which was a really good. ive never used recon bindings but if they are as good as the board they are definately worth a look. Im not sure if they have a toe cap on them though? if thats important maybe you should get some more Cartels or go for some Missions or Customs which are both similar to Cartels but a but cheaper.

I would say stay with the cartels since you like them, they are a great freestyle bindings. But if you are looking for somthing a little different check out the rome 390's. I used to ride the cartels alot but the high-back was starting to get anoying. Even though i had them set a 0 degree forward lean it still felt like it was pushing me alittle forward, and thats why i switched to the 390's.

If youre tired of your cartels, wait until next season and buy the 08 ones. I have them, and they put every prior model to shame. The high-back no longer hurts the calf, they toned it down, and gave it a living-hinge (like on the C02 and C60) and the capstrap has been tweaked to better fit any boot (again). I had hated the cartels and used missions forever, up til this year when my rep gave me a pair of 08's in hopes to change my mind... Im a believer.

Check out the Movement line (Mvmt) from Ride bindings. Ride makes the best bindings around, and the movement line (Alpha Mvmt, Beta Mvmt, Delta Mvmt) are designed specifically for freestyle with the right amount of flex, adjustment capabilities, along with the best durability available.
This is not to say that there aren't other good options out there, but Ride has been doing it better and has become the industry leader in bindings, imo.

I have the Burton Customs and i absolutely love them! They have the toe cap ( actually called a 'cap strap') that you can change the length of, for your boot. The high backs are also adjustable to tilt forward more or less to fit ur preference. they are very durable and look amazing i must say.
They retail for about $140
