when taking an fml for a serious illness do you still recieve a paycheck

Not at the company I work for. If you have vacation built up they will let you take that but when that is gone your on your own. Plus if you have insurance through them you still have to keep those payments up while you are gone.

This will depend in part on the employer, but the law states employers must grant up to twelve weeks of UNPAID leave each year for medical conditions, such as a birth or a sick family member. If you are ill there may be other types of leave you can take that will be paid, such as long term disability, etc. Check your employers benefits information.

Not unless your company policy provides for paid FMLA leave. Federal FMLA leave is unpaid; some states have provisions to pay a portion of the employee's salary during FMLA leave taken for family reasons (new birth, adoption, etc.) It works similarly to unemployment insurance.
