My neighbour has two Ash trees growing against the boundary fence. I've been told that hammering half a doz copper nails into each tree will slowly kill them. Does anyone know if this is true or just an old wife's tail. Does anyone have any other suggestions for getting rid of them. Do not suggest that I ask my neighbour to get rid of them as he is quite unapproachable.

Jerry G. is correct. Is it really worth getting a hefty fine over or possibly spending time in the local pokey? You have no business dealing with what grows in your neighbors yard. The only weight you hold, is you may be able to cut any branches which hang over into your yard from the neighbors tree, but only on your side of the property line. Each city has their own code ordinance for this and you need to contact them to find out just what your options are... But to even think about driving copper nails into someone else's tree is utterly ridiculous and malicious to say the least. And if you do, your not much of a gardener!!

Surely you jest. The legal ramifications are beyond comprehension. To start you would have Trespass, vandalism, michieve, malicious mischieve, destruction of property, etc.
Whereas your neighbor can as much control the growth and waste from the Ash Trees you can ask them to remove the waste from your yard on a regular basis. Put it in writting and forward a copy to both your county council and the neighbor. You can also contact the county for a mediation of a civil dispute. Filing a civil suit for a tree is a no-win and the actions you propose is a I-lose.

Strictly against the law but sodium chlorate (cheap weed killer) mixed fairly strong will do the trick , all you need is a watering can & apply several doses around the roots (once a fortnight for 2 months) & they will slowly die, speed depends on size of trees. please think carefully before doing this tho as your neighbour could sue you & also any legal dispute has to be declared when you try to sell the house & put off potential buyers.good luck but think before you act.

If the trunks of the trees are closer than six feet to your boundary fence, it is possible he is breaking the law. This is because eventually the rooots will invade yout garden and starve you soil thus depriving your plants of nutriment. Check with your local authoriy on this. They could issue a summons ordering him to fell them.

this is and old wife's tail.if the trees are small any nailes will work.if the trees are not on your property do not touch them ,it could open you up for a law suit.check your local laws most places you can trim any thing that hangs over on your prop.
