It depends on the style of shoe that you're going to be wearing with them. Ankle length is fine for flats, but if you'll be wearing heels then you're going to want them to be a bit longer. Obviously if you'll be wearing boots over them length isn't an issue at all. Mostly it depends on personal preference, just try on a few styles and see what you think looks best.
