I can have 2GB of RAM for an iMac, but for 3GB it's an extra £400... will the extra 1GB make much difference? Can I add more myself later?

Not at that price.

2GB is more than enough for most applications.

Yes you could buy extra ram later.

Ebuyer is cheap.

You can add RAM yourself (sort of). It matters on how many slots there are, and what Apple is putting in each. I dont know what iMacs have but Im guessing there are 4 from your description. It would be good to know it they are putting 4 512MB sticks in or 2 1GB sticks in. It will be cheaper to add RAM later if there are 2 sticks. (4x512MB may be a slight performance increase over 2x1GB just as a side note).

However, unless you are running a lot of high powered graphical applications, 2GB is plenty.

You could buy a 1gb of ram yourself cheaper and have it fitted for less than £400.

placed the greater suitable card in the slot at the instant used and stick the 512 in the different one. you ought to get the excellent a million.5GB. memory is far less costly as chips at the instant and this is the single factor you are able to rather do which will majorly inprove your present device - working platforms like XP have rather greater in length lots with the three provider packs. in case you have a million.5GB of RAM you will possibly evaluate updating to Vista. this is sufficient to run the recent OS nicely. (Realistically you desire a minimum of a million GB of RAM for Vista to run easily)

Unless you're making videos, or top-notch music production, then it won't make much difference. Four hundred seems a bit steep mind (maybe I'm used to dodgy PC ram)

It depends on what you use your PC for.
Basic applications(Music, Word Processing, basic gaming) should be fine.
Extreme gaming(Games that need high performance) Upgrade to 3GB

Don't let them rip you off if you don't need it!!!
