Reset it. Depending on which model you have, you have to hold down a few of the buttons at the same time for something like 5 seconds. The article below gives directions.

Same thing happened to me - My computer had a virus and I had that repaired, but before that happened I had been charging my iPod via the computer and the virus had obviously gotten in to the iPod and it just froze. I tried the trouble shooting and toggling stuff - no luck so I took it back to Comet and they contacted Apple while I waited and Apple said just give the customer a replacement! Sweet. No problems since then - mind you that was only yesterday!!

"Toggle" it, slide the hold button back and forth a few times then push down on the centre and top button of the click wheel. Do this until the screen comes to life again.

bash it against a wall and shout START WORKING YOU SILLY THING, and if it doesn't listen to you put it under your pillow, but leaving it to charge, and by the morning the iPod fairy may have fixed the problem (depending on how much tribute you pay to the iPod fairy (they don't like cauliflower, so don't offer any. they prefer mushrooms))
good luck!!

Try switching it on and off again. If that doesn't work leave it until the battery dies, then plug it in and see how things go.
